Join Club Red this Saturday, June 11th as we kick-off summer with the annual Club Red Hurricane Party. June marks the start of hurricane season which affects thousands of North and Central Americans every year. At this event, we’ll raise awareness of the importance of emergency preparation and volunteerism. At the same time, we’ll provide a fun and relaxing environment for young professionals, equipped with a Cajun meal and cocktails.

ALAMO DRAFTHOUSE TO HOST FUNDRAISER SEPT 29TH

We are very excited to have the Alamo Drafthouse and Master Pancake Theater hosting a one-night-only show mocking The Day After Tomorrow to benefit the American Red Cross of Central Texas!

The show is next Wednesday night, September 29^th at 7pm at the Alamo Ritz downtown and tickets are now on sale.  The Master Pancake shows have a tendency to sell out quickly so if you would like to go be sure and get your tickets soon.  See you there!

JOIN US AT THE AUSTIN PRIDE PARADE THIS SATURDAY

Our Chapter will be marching in the Austin Pride Parade this Saturday, June 5th at 8:30pm in support of the Austin LGBT community. We want as many Red Cross staff and volunteers down there as we can get! Please feel free to bring friends and family as well as we support the Austin LGBT community. 

What to Wear

Wear your vest!!  Of course, if you have any Red Cross apparel please wear that as well.  And comfortable shoes.  We will have some extra vests at the event.

Parking

Public parking near the Long Center will be available for $10 in the following garages/lots:

·         Palmer Events Center Garage – Handicapped accessible parking is available in this garage on all levels near the elevators.

·         One Texas Center Parking Garage and Lot (505 Barton Springs Road)

The staging area for the parade will be on Auditorium Shores west of 1^st Street.  We will not know our exact position in line until Saturday so just look for the ERV!!

What Time To Get There

Please be at the staging area by 7:30pm.

Parade Route

The parade will go from Auditorium Shores down Cesar Chavez to Congress and then into the Warehouse District via 4^th Street.  See parade map below:

Walking groups will disband at 4^th and Guadalupe and the ERV will need to continue down Guadalupe and back to the staging area.

The parade ends at the Austin Pride Block Party in the Warehouse District.  There is a $10 admission charge for the Block Party (which also gets you into every other Austin Pride Festival event except Mario Cantone) and it promises to be quite a party!  Blake Lewis, Frenchie Davis and DJ Chris Cox will be taking the stage and yummy food from places such as Carl’s Jr., The Belmont and Mangia Pizza will be onsite as well.  The Block Party is 21 and up.

If you are not interested in attending the Block Party, cabs and pedi-cabs will be available to get you back to the parking garages near the Long Center.

What to Bring

Everyone participating in the parade must sign a Liability Waiver and Photo Release Form.  You can print out the form here and bring it with you to the parade.  We will also have forms available at the staging area.  You will not be able to walk in the parade if you do not sign this form.

What Not To Bring

• Alcohol or drugs
• Confetti, silly string or air horns
• Balloons filled with anything other than helium or air
• Bricks, stones or any other projectile launching equipment (including water pistols)
• Body armor
• Probably best to also leave your dogs at home for this event

We invite you to attend our monthly group meetings. They are informative, and a great way to meet people and create a strong support network.

This meeting is designed to support the members of military families, active duty service members, National Guard and Reserve and veterans in our community with information and resources.

We will talk about the impact of deployments on everyone in the family – spouses, fiancees, children, parents, etc.

Everyone who has been on a deployment, who may be deployed or who has a loved one in either of those categories is encouraged to become a part of this network

Free on-site childcare and dinner are provided.

COW (CAREER ON WHEELS) DAY FOR ELEMENTARY STUDENTS

Red Cross is delighted to participate for the past several years in this event, a unique approach to career awareness for students as they prepare to go to school with purpose. COW Day is part Achieve Texas, an initiative to provide career awareness to 2000 students at the elementary level. Staff member Amber Cooney partnered with volunteer Jim Dixon to education the kids about the Red Cross. Photos by Courtney Dudley.

DALE WATSON SIGNS RED CROSS GUITAR FOR UPCOMING FUNDRAISER

I had an awesome time last night at the Broken Spoke getting Dale Watson's autograph on the guitar....Everyone there was super nice and as soon as I told them my mission they let me right in, and pointed me to Dale's wife who waited a song and then interrupted him and got him to sign the guitar during his set. He wasn't satisfied with this though and decided to tune it on the spot and play a song for everybody on it!

PAT GREEN PROCLAMATION DAY

The Central Texas Chapter was delighted to be part of a presentation Saturday at Threadgill's to honor musician Pat Green with a Pat Green Day Proclamation. Mr. Green is a member of the Red Cross Celebrity Cabinet and is a big supporter.

Volunteer and Board Chair-Elect Marty McKellips said this: 

"I presented the award in front of a crowd of loyal Pat Green fans, most of whom had won the privilege of attending this VIP event in radio contests. People were there from as far away as Oklahoma. There was a free buffet of Threadgill's favorites. The fans were very enthusiastic and cheered at the mention of the Red Cross, the Celebrity Cabinet and the work the Pat Green had done for us. He then performed an intimate set taking questions from the audience between songs. One fan suggested the Pat Green Day in Texas should be an annual event."

WELCOME FIRE CHIEF RHODA MAE KERR

The American Red Cross of Central Texas had the honor of welcoming Austin's new fire chief, Rhoda Mae Kerr. We're excited, because Chief Kerr served on the board of the American Red Cross in Little Rock, Arkansas, and she really understands how important the Red Cross is to any community. After all, the vast majority of the disasters we respond to are fires -- one every 48 hours here in Central Texas. Carmen and Saleem Tawil hosted the event in their home. Thanks Carmen and Saleem! And thanks to all the area firefighters and city officials who joined us. It was great to spend time with you when everyone could relax and have a good time!
